Keep The Lights On

the street names haven’t changed
dead leaves along the driveway
of a house who’s hallway smells the same
but why does it feel wrong
the neighbor's kids, they all moved away
and my eyes bloodshot red, strained
from looking for tomorrow
in yesterday,
why am I here
but hold on you’ll stand as you fall
it makes no difference either way
an empty hall
or a curtain call
keep the lights on today
keep the lights on one more day
the ringing in my ears never fades
the pictures on the wall won’t look away
silence laces words you won’t say
why is it so clear
my boots are caked with mud from the winter rains
and this oak wood floor’s finish has been stained
to take it all back, when you just scrubbed the grain
why would you now?
as the water starts to rise above my head
I keep breathing at the sky in hopes it drowns away the sin
my eyes are shuttered closed
to block the worries of
the ways that this could end
and I let go...
hold on, you’ll stand as you fall
it makes no difference either way
and empty hall or a curtain call
keep the lights on today
keeps the lights on one more day..
